The actual argan oil is produced from the kernels of the argan tree known as the Argania spinosa L. tree and it's only found in Morocco. In Morocco, the argan oil is often use to dip bread into during breakfast and it's also used over pasta dishes. In it's raw un-process state it can be used in recipes but after it has been processed for cosmetics it's no longer suitable to eat.

The fruit of the argan tree is little, and are round, oval. There's a thick peel that covers the fruit and it's fleshy pulp insides. The pulp surrounds a hard-shelled nut that represents roughly 25 % of the weight of the fresh fruit. Once removed it exposes the argan nuts that can be used to make the argan oil.

There are only between 1 - 3 argan oil-rich kernels and the extraction process can yields between 30 % to 50 % of the oil in the kernels, depending on the type extraction process used.

Extraction is crucial to the production process as the fruit is first dried out in the open air to eliminate the fleshy pulp surrounding the argan nut that contains the oil-rich kernels. Some extraction processes are mechanical and the pulp is removed without drying the fruit first.

The next stage involves breaking the argan nut to acquire the argan kernels inside. Efforts to mechanize this procedure have actually not been too successful, so employees still do it manually making it a lengthy, labor-intensive procedure driving up the cost of the argan.

As part of the extraction process the kernels are gently roast before being turned into raw argan oil.

This roasting process can diminish the original quality or purity of the argan so a cold press method is used to preserve the oils integrity.

Next the argan kernels are cooled down and workers grind and press them to removes pure, unfiltered argan oil.
